The second graph is a closer view of the current temperature trend.
The black line in the first graph represents the trend in the data. This trend is indicative of "global cooling" and "global warming" phases. The much longer data series being currently investigated to determine ‘global warming’ cannot be ascertained with any certainty from this short period of time. The trend-line has been above average since mid-century; although it was not until the 1990s that extreme, record-breaking weather patterns first emerged. Weird weather patterns will continue as global warming marches on. The current long-term warming trend is expected to rise by 1.1-2.9 degrees - and to as much as 6.4 degrees - by the end of the century according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
